Take a step (or pedal) in the right direction

Cycle to School Week is back for 2026!

From Monday 5 to Friday 9 October 2026, schools and families across the nation will be taking a new route to the school gate — one that’s quicker, healthier, cheaper and a whole lot more fun.

Cycle to School Week is a national celebration of everyday cycling. Whether you’re already rolling or just getting started, it’s your chance to build confidence, try something new, and discover how good the school run can feel on wheels.

Cycle to School Week is supported by NatWest Rooster Money. Just like everyone at Bikeability, they believe in reinforcing positive behaviours from a young age, to instill confidence and independence. Find out more about NatWest Rooster Money and give your kids a head start with finances.

The real cost of the school run

Every journey has a cost — but not always the one you expect.

This year’s Cycle to School Week shines a light on the real cost of getting to school, and how choosing to cycle can change the journey for the better.

We’re looking at what the school run “costs” families across the nation — not just money, but time, wellbeing, and the world around us. Together, they tell a simple story: small changes in how we travel can make a big difference to everyday life.

On average in the UK, the school run costs families £109 per year*.

Pedal power requires a one-off investment with minimal running costs — no fuel, no tax, and no parking fees. A simpler way to get from A to B… by Cycle!

The school run can take up nearly 100 hours* across the school year. That’s time lost to congestion and drop-off queues.

The average primary school journey is just a 15-minute cycle. Less rush, more ride!

Bring some fun to the school run!

Cycling helps children build confidence and independence while starting the day in a calmer, more active way. Helping pupils arrive at school energised and ready for the day ahead.

Every short car journey adds to congestion and air pollution around schools.

Switching the school run from car to cycle for a whole school year could save around 307kg* — helping create cleaner air and healthier streets for children.

A better route with Batch Bicycles

We’re proud to be supported by Batch Bicycles for Cycle to School Week 2026.

Batch Bicycles believe cycling should be simple, accessible and part of everyday life — a perfect fit for a campaign built around taking a new route to school and rethinking the real cost of the school run.

Their approach is all about making cycling easy to start and even easier to enjoy — helping families feel confident and supported, whether it’s a school run ride or a weekend adventure.

As part of Cycle to School Week, Batch Bicycles will be supporting our family and individual pledge route, helping to inspire more everyday journeys by cycle.
