Hot on the heels of making the final of the Third Sector awards, The Bikeability Trust have won the BikeBiz award for Cycle Advocacy.
The BikeBiz Awards celebrate innovative work being done across the cycling industry, with the winners decided by industry professionals and cycling enthusiasts. The awards have been going for 15 years and recognise the top talent from across the UK cycling scene.
Ensuring access to cycling for every child
The Bikeability Trust won for their Fleet Cycles project, which saw 1,124 cycles provided to schools to ensure their pupils could take part in Bikeability training.
After identifying one of the barriers to learning to ride was not having access to a cycle, the Trust purchased over 1,000 bicycles with funding from the Department for Transport. The cycles were distributed to Bikeability training providers, who use them to take to schools so all children can learn to ride, whether they have access to a cycle or not.
The cycles were used over 16,000 times between April 2023 and May 2024, giving at least that many children the chance to start their cycling journey, not just learning this life skill but helping to build a cycling culture in schools and communities.
The Cycle Advocacy Award
The Cycle Advocacy Award is recognises organisations and companies that advocate cycling throughout the UK by promoting funding schemes, cycling education, or infrastructure campaigning.
Benjamin Smith, Director of Development at The Bikeability Trust, attended the award finals, which took place in Birmingham on 31 October.
“At the Trust our mission is to make sure as many children have access to cycling as possible, which is a life skill we believe everyone should benefit from. Our Fleet Cycles project has helped our fantastic instructors and colleagues in the Bikeability industry reach even more children who would otherwise not have the chance to learn to ride.
“It’s wonderful to be recognised for this project, and I was delighted to accept the award on behalf of all of our industry, who work tirelessly to bring the gift of cycling to as many people as possible across the country.”
