Bikeability funding available for football clubs

Funding is available to coaches in the Premier League, Championship and English Football League to access our new Recognised Prior Learning route. Once qualified, coaches can deliver cycle training to young people in their local communities, offering them a potential income stream and new skills, and the lifelong benefits of confident cycling to more young people.

Football club charities also benefit: as well as offering more employment opportunities to coaches, clubs could access funding by working with Bikeability training providers to deliver cycle training in local schools in the future.

Port Vale Community Foundation were one of the first clubs to take part. Their coaches are already learning valuable new skills, and will soon be working with the local council to deliver funded Bikeability places. Will Turner, head of community at Port Vale Foundation, said: “It’s given our coaches a lot more skills…that they can call on when delivering their activities.”

How does it work?

Level 2 coaches from communities and foundations charities already have many of the skills needed to successfully deliver cycle training, so we’re funding them to enrol on a new Recognised Prior Learning route to the 1st4Sport Level 2 Award in Instructing Cycle Training. Up to four coaches from each club will attend three days of practical training plus an e-learning module done at a convenient time. The training will be delivered at the coaches’ football club.

Level 1 coaches don’t need to miss out. We can offer a standard route Level 2 course which takes place over three days and involves a little more e-learning. We may ask coaches to travel to a location nearby and join other Bikeability instructors in training.
