Family Cycling – it’s not just for kids!
As much as we love teaching children to cycle with confidence, it doesn’t stop there. We want kids to enjoy cycling as a life skill – and that means making sure they carry on cycling outside of school.
If families don’t cycle, children don’t cycle. So we have developed Bikeability Family cycle training to help you get on your bikes. Whether you want further training for your child after they complete Level 2 at school, or you as the parent need support, we’re here to help.
Cycle training for families is available across England. In April 2021, the Department for Transport announced £18m funding for cycle training, including for families. This doesn’t cover every family, but it’s a fantastic first step. To find a course near you, visit our Find family Cycle Training page and submit your postcode. Your local training provider will be able to let you know about training, free or otherwise.
Why cycle as a family?
Every family is different
Our family cycle training works with you to meet your needs. Our instructors tailor everything to suit your family’s ability and interests.
Learn how to cycle together, not apart
We teach children to lead and cycle in front of adults, not behind. It might feel scary at first, but it allows your child to build confidence whilst you keep a watchful eye.
Traffic isn’t something to be scared of
Bikeability teaches children to cycle on today’s roads; not the roads you grew up with. Often, our family training reveals that parents feel more nervous on busy roads than children. We will help you feel confident.
See your kid’s skills in action
Hearing about Bikeability training for children isn’t the same as seeing it in action. We use the same techniques to teach families that we use in schools. Give your kids a chance to show off – their skills might surprise you!
Ditch the car and enjoy the ride
For short journeys, there’s no need to take the car. Cycling creates fun family memories together. Our training will show you how to prepare for a journey, so you can explore as a family.
We’ll help you plan
Sometimes the hardest task is deciding your route. What’s best in a car might not be best by bike. Our instructors will help you plan an enjoyable scenic ride for all the family.
