Lucy, Cycling Support Officer for Hertfordshire tells us about how it has been delivering cycle training this term:
“As the schools started the Autumn term adjusting to a new normal, the Hertfordshire Cycling team began delivering Bikeability Training to children across Hertfordshire, to encourage more active travel.
Since lockdown in March there have been an increased number of cyclists on the roads and networks across Hertfordshire. Published Strava Metro data shows at the peak there was a positive increase of 684% cycle rides across the county.
During lockdown we supplied schools with a presentation to help keep our county’s children safe on their bikes, however nothing can replace the physical approach of Bikeability Training. With our team of experienced instructors, we have embraced the new normal and are now delivering Bikeability training to over 60 schools this term.
We run between 4-7 courses per week and instructors are working closely with schools to deliver training in a COVID safe environment. In the first 2 weeks of term we saw over 300 children achieve their Level 1 or 2 Bikeability, increasing their confidence in cycling.
Working closely with schools has been key to making it possible for children to receive valuable training.
Ms Williams, from The Orchard Primary school sent this message “A big thank you to all of you for your work with our children this week. They came back from each session happy and excited about what they had learnt and experienced and were always so excited to go out each day.”
Ms Williams went on to say “The children learnt a lot and it was even great to see them ride off safely on the way home each day and I know what you have taught them will stay with them forever.”
This week we are celebrating Bike to School Week, we look forward to seeing an increase in cycle events in schools and we will be busy delivering training in another 6 locations across Hertfordshire.
